Typical Symptoms

The symptoms of an Alpha 1 MZ individual are related to a ~50% lower level of Alpha 1 Antitrypsin in the body, and the fact that 50% of the Alpha 1 Antitrypsin gets "stuck" in your liver, which induces liver and digestive issues

Within the Alpha 1 MZ group we started a correlation study to get a better idea of the most common health issues / symptoms. ( Please note that because lung issues are well known, these were not part of this study)

This study will be expanded to a large group in the near future.

Prevailing health conditions within the small group;

  • B12 deficiency, leading to different types of neuropathy

  • Vitamin D25 deficiency

  • Iron deficiency (some on infusions)

  • Intermittent pain in the liver area

  • Light color stool, bloating and flatulence

  • Only easy to digest food is accepted

  • Issues keeping the body warm

  • Low glucose levels

  • High blood pressure

  • Pain in joints (Connective tissues and arthritis)

  • Unable to deal with medications like NSAID and/or other medication

  • More illness during childhood with lung related issues

  • In need of more salt intake was also mentioned (needs further investigation)

  • Reduced immune response, including deficiency of thrombocytes / lymphocytes

  • Skin issues like eczema or psoriasis

Because the study is in a preliminary stage, we can only provide very general information at this stage;

  • Lung related issues, like lung emphysema and bronchiectasis

  • Liver related issues, Fatty liver, Liver Fibrosis, Cirrhosis

  • Connective tissue related issues, like tendon, tendon sheaths and ligaments

  • Immune issues, like autoimmune and immune response issues

  • Anti-inflammatory issues

  • Digestive issues causing:

    • B12 / Neurological issues

    • Calcium absorption issues and low Vit D status

    • Iron deficiency

Because of the liver/available bile issues, there are digestive / absorption issues  in the small intestine, which causes various vitamin and minerals deficiency issues.
